Agua fresca de plátano is a Mexican classic that hits the spot on a hot afternoon. Ripe bananas, cold milk, a little vanilla, and a pinch of cinnamon get blended until smooth and creamy. It’s sweet without being heavy, and it only takes a few minutes to make.

Steps

  1. Peel the bananas. Riper is better here, since brown-spotted bananas make a sweeter drink.

  2. Add the bananas, evaporated milk, condensed milk, regular milk, Mexican vanilla, and a pinch of salt to a blender. Blend until smooth.

  3. Pour in the cold water and blend again. Add a little more or less depending on how thick you like it.

  4. For a light cinnamon flavor, drop in a cinnamon stick and let it sit for about 10 minutes, then take it out.

  5. Pour over a glass full of ice and sprinkle a little ground cinnamon on top if you’d like.

  6. Drink it right away, while it’s cold and fresh.
